Nikolaihof “Aus den Gärten” Grüner Veltliner Federspiel 2023

- Wine: “Aus den Gärten” Grüner Veltliner Federspiel
- Vintage: 2023
- Alcohol: 12.5% vol.
- Residual sugar: approx. 1 g/l → clearly dry
- Acidity: approx. 5.2 g/l
- Maturation: large, old wooden casks (no new barrique influence)
- Farming: biodynamic (Demeter)
Sensory profile
Colour: Light to delicate golden yellow with greenish reflections, typical for a young, high-quality Wachau Veltliner.
Nose: A very typical but particularly clear Veltliner aroma:
- Fruit: kumquat, quince, green to ripe apple, a touch of stone fruit
- Herbal: distinct but fine herbal component (kitchen herbs, coriander, cress)
-
Nutty-spicy nuances: walnut, white pepper, slightly mineral (“wet stone”)
The nose appears creamy and charming, yet already hints at body and depth.
Palate:
- Dry, with juicy fullness and a creamy texture, but without heaviness.
- The acidity (approx. 5.2 g/l) is lively but not aggressive — it gives the wine backbone and length.
- Clear minerality, a touch of white pepper on the finish; the fruit remains precise and not overripe.
- Overall: very inviting to drink, with good tension and a “crisp”, fresh character.
Finish: Medium-long to long, mineral-spicy, with a hint of white pepper and a clean, dry finish.
Style & terroir
“Aus den Gärten” comes from the “Im Weingebirge” vineyard, one of the oldest documented vineyard sites in Europe (first mentioned in the 5th century). The soils are a mix of clay, loess and paragneiss, giving the wine its typical combination of body, spice and mineral backbone.
Maturation in large, old casks ensures that fruit and terroir remain in the foreground, without noticeable new oak influence. Biodynamic farming (Demeter) contributes to a special clarity and “honest” structure, characteristic of Nikolaihof.
Classification: Federspiel
As a Federspiel, the alcohol at 12.5% vol. sits in the typical Wachau range (approx. 11.5–12.5%). This means:
- more body and depth than a classic “Steinfeder” style,
- but less power and alcohol than a “Smaragd”.
It is therefore ideal as a food-accompanying white wine with good ageing potential.
Mayer am Pfarrplatz Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC 2025, 12.5%
- Winery: Mayer am Pfarrplatz, Vienna (19th district, Grinzing)
- Wine: Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC 2025
- Alcohol: 12.5% vol.
- Residual sugar: approx. 1.0 g/l → clearly dry
- Acidity: approx. 5.3 g/l
- Grape varieties: classic Viennese field blend of approx. 40% Grüner Veltliner, 30% Riesling, 15% Rotgipfler, 15% Zierfandler
- Style: regional wine (DAC), planted, harvested and fermented together — a typical Viennese “field blend”.
Sensory profile
Colour: Light greenish to straw yellow, clear and bright — typical for a young, fresh Gemischter Satz.
Nose:
- Fruit: pear, citrus (lemon, grapefruit), green to yellow apple, a touch of stone fruit (peach, apricot)
-
Fine floral and spicy nuances: white flowers, a hint of herbs, sometimes a subtle mineral note
The aromatics are youthful and fresh, with a nice interplay between fruit and spice, without heavy or overripe tones.
Palate:
- Dry, with crisp, lively acidity (approx. 5.3 g/l), giving the wine plenty of freshness and drinkability.
- Medium body, juicy and inviting, without becoming heavy.
- The different grape varieties create a more complex structure than a single-varietal cuvée: Veltliner brings spice and structure, Riesling acidity and citrus, Rotgipfler and Zierfandler add body and a fine exotic note.
- Overall very easy-drinking, with a straightforward, refreshing style.
Finish: Fruity-fresh, with a clean, dry finish and a light spicy aftertaste; the length is very good for a regional wine.
Style & DAC background
The Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC is a protected Viennese speciality: at least three white grape varieties must grow together in the same vineyard, be harvested together and vinified together. Mayer am Pfarrplatz implements this with the classic Viennese blend of Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Rotgipfler and Zierfandler — a typical, time-honoured composition for Vienna.
At 12.5% alcohol and with a dry character, the wine sits in the classic “Klassik” style of the DAC: light to medium-bodied, fruit-driven and primarily designed for drinking pleasure and food pairing, not for extreme power or long ageing.
